Hamilton is a legend in motorsport circles, with 103 wins and 104 pole positions to his name. Ferrari have long been admirers of his considerable talent behind the wheel and negotiations regarding a switch to the Scuderia are said to be at an advanced stage.

Hamilton has made no secret of his desire to seal an eighth drivers’ title before retiring and has had two seasons of struggles with the former dominant team of the sport.

He had spoken more optimistically about Mercedes’ chances going into this season following a major upgrade of their faltering car. But his apparent decision to cross the grid to Ferrari hardly indicates he has a strong belief in his current team’s chances of closing the gap on frontrunners Red Bull.

While no deal has been made official at this stage, it would leave Mercedes with a gaping hole to fill by the end of the season, which gets under way in Bahrain on March 2.

At the time of this publication both Ferrari and Mercedes had not issued a comment .
