In Summary

  • Maya Amolo embraces vulnerability and experimentation in her evolving music career.
  • She values authentic energy in collaborations, from drill with Buruklyn Boyz to potential Arbantone with Lil Maina.
  • With new releases lined up, Maya continues to push boundaries while staying rooted in her R&B soul.

In a recent sit-down on Ghetto Radio’s Mid-morning show, NiajeNiaje, Kenyan R&B singer Maya Amolo shared her journey. From studying Anthropology in New York to becoming a genre-bending artist back home.

Raised on a steady dose of R&B and having finished high school in Swaziland, Maya emphasizes staying true to oneself: “If you’re yourself, someone will connect.”

She recounted her first experience with drill music on Niskize, a collaboration with Buruklyn Boyz.

“I was so nervous… but they were so friendly in the studio, I got comfortable and did my thing.” Her openness to creative chemistry is evident: “If the energy is right, I’ll try anything—sing, rap, dance.”

Maya’s musical journey is layered with vulnerability and love.

Her 2020 EP Leave Me at the Pregame explores emotional honesty, while her album Asali and its 2023 deluxe edition capture the essence of being in love.

In 2024, she released What a Feeling, and she’s already rolling out new music in 2025 with Sweetest Time featuring Ywaya Tajiri and another single dropping later this month.

Despite not studying music formally, Maya is deeply immersed in it and not just as a vocalist.

“I’m lowkey a rapper.I can rap but I’m too shy to do that right now but hopefully sometime in the future you’ll hear some Maya Amolo bars,” she reveals with a laugh, teasing potential bars in the future.

On Arbantone, this is what she had to say, “I like it, I’m a fan. It’s a vibe. Maybe I’ll make Arbantone with Lil Maina, It’ll be fire.”

Looking ahead, she dreams of collaborating with Bien, Maandy Kabaya, Tems, Doja Cat and Tyla.
