A single mother in Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums is still paying the price for the Mukuru Kwa Njenga demolitions more than one year later.

Maxmillah Luhavi a single mother of four says that she lost her house and source of income in the demolitions and is yet to recover.

Luhavi who is currently living in Kware says that her eldest child who is in Grade 4 has been unable to go to school due to lack of money.

“Saa hii sina mbele wala nyuma. Mtoto wangu wa kwanza ako na miaka 13 na hata hajaenda shule. Nimemsomesha na shida mingi sana lakini saa hiii nimeshidwa kabisa, ako tu nyumbani,” said Luhavi.

Housekeeping hustle terminated

She says that her hustle of housekeeping also came to an end after she gave birth to her fourth child.

“Tangu nipate huyu mtoto wangu mdogo, siwezi hata enda kazi kwa sababu hakuna mtu wa kunishikia mtoto nikifanya kazi ya nyumba. Naumia sana,” she stated.

Luhavi’s husband abandoned her after life became hard following the demolitions that displaced them.

She is now appealing to well-wishers to show up and assist her.

“Mimi naomba msamaria mwema aje anisaidie hata anisaidie na kazi niweze kulisha na kupeleka watoto wangu shule.”
