Incarcerated dancehall star Vybz Kartel is in urgent need of a heart surgery as his condition continues to deteriorate behind bars following his battle with the ‘Graves disease, a critical heart condition which has left the singer with a swollen thyroid.
According to a report from his private physician, Dr. Karen Philips, M.D, there’s a 20 per cent decline in his heart health since the echo in June 2023 and a decrease in global wall function to a dangerous 37 per cent.
This indicates that Kartel is developing a heart failure which may result to a heart attack.
The report further noted that the results being below 40 per cent is a clear indication that he’s at the risk of a heart failure or cardiomyopathy.
The physician tabled the medical affidavit before the courts affirming that Kartel’s medical condition haven’t improved and he could lose his life if he does not get an urgent surgery.
Speaking to the press, Kartel’s oldest son, Likkle Vybz said things aren’t looking good for his father and they’re continuing to intercede with prayers.
“The best thing we can do is just pray and be strong” he said partly.
Kartel’s lead counsel, Isat Buchanan also likened Kartel’s cell to an oven maintaining that the conditions are extremely poor with little ventilation.
He further revealed that the prison made some improvements like dropping the use of buckets to normal toilets.
However, he still noted that they have a long way to go in making the conditions humane.
