Kenyan authorities, led by Voi Sub-county Police Commander Ibrahim Daffala, have confirmed a tragic road accident involving a Kenyatta University school bus and a trailer in Maungu, Voi, along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

The incident resulted in the loss of at least 11 lives, with 10 students perishing at the scene and another succumbing to injuries in the hospital.

Additionally,the collision left  42 students with severe injuries.Four students sustained minor wounds.

The accident

The accident occurred during heavy rainfall, with reports indicating that the trailer attempted to veer off the road to avoid a direct collision, ultimately leading to the collision with the school bus.

“The accident occurred at a time when it was raining heavily. The lorry tried to move away from the road to avoid a head-on collision leading to the accident,” Daffala stated.

Photographs obtained  depict the left side of the school bus being struck in the collision.

The bus was transporting public health students on an academic trip to Mombasa, with a total of 58 passengers onboard at the time of the accident.

Concurrently ,the trailer involved was on the route to Nairobi when the tragic incident transpired.

Fortunately, four students managed to escape with very minor injuries and were safely taken to Maungu Police Station for further processing and assistance.

This devastating accident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with road travel, particularly during adverse weather conditions.

Authorities are likely to conduct thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
