Gorofani residents in Embakasi South Constituency have threatened to hold street protests following a seven day power black out in the area.

Catherine a community leader claims that Kenya Power officials are instead demanding Ksh. 10k to restore the power.

“We have had a power blackout for more than one week now. The problem started when we saw the transformer removing sparks. We then called Kenya Power who then cam and picked the transformer.

“Unfortunately they have refused to return the transformer. When we call them, they keep telling us to give them Ksh. 10,000 for the service. Are we not paying taxes?” posed Catherine.

Businesses affected

According to Catherine, the power blackout has affected many businesses including, salons, barber shops and even milk dispenser that need electricity to keep the milk fresh.

“People are hurting. Many of us are unable to go to work because of this power blackout, salonists cannot work and even barber shops,” said Catherine.

Catherine says that the power blackout has caused a very serious situation of insecurity by illegal gangs.

“Illegal gangs have taken advantage of this situation and are now stealing and attacking people hence making the place very insecure,” she said.

Area MCA has tried to intervene to no avail.

“When the MCA calls them, they keep asking rhetoric questions like which station picked the transformer. Kwani hamujijui? Kwa sababu ni nyinyi mlikujja hapa nanlandrover zenu mkachukua transformer,” she said.
