Vybz Kartel’s legal team have filed an application known as ‘Habeas Corpus’ for his release together with two of his co-accused as they await a hearing on whether they will be tried for murder slated for next month.

The Court of Appeal is set to hear arguments on June 10, 2024 whether Kartel and his co-accused Shawn Campbell, Andre St. John and Kahira Jones should be re-tried for the 2011 murder of Clive Williams popularly referred to as ‘Lizard’.

This follows a ruling by the UK Privy Council in March which ruled that the accused persons did not receive a fair trial.

The case was ordered to be heard before the Court of Appeal in Jamaica for a decision. The Court of Appeal is set to hear the arguments for and against regarding facts and the law.

Habeas Corpus Application

The process by which Kartel’s legal team is seeking for their release is known as Habeas Corpus.

The court has been urged to exercise its powers to examine the circumstances of Kartel’s continued detention noting that it’s unlawful and unjustifiable therefore seeking his release unconditionally.

However, the application only covers Kartel, Campbell and Andre St. John. Kahira Jones will remain behind bars as he continues to serve his 18 year sentence for shooting and harming Chevalo Rodney in 2009.

At the time of Jones arrest for the killing of Clive Williams along with Kartel and the others in 2011 he was out on bail for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Rodney had pointed out at Jones as the person who shot him.

Surprisingly, Rodney was killed two years later however, his death wasn’t linked to Jones.
