Day after the government increased the fuel prices with additional 5 shillings Kenyans have call out on the government saying they are overwhelmed and facing tough economic times.We talked to Jane Nyakola a mother of 6 who uses kerosene for her daily cooking. She says the consistent increase of fuel has left her to only prepare one meal a day.

She adds that the fuel has now become expensive more than what to be cooked making it difficult to embrace two meal a day.

Considering her big family Jane says she had no option but to cook once  at 4pm.

“Maisha imekua ngumu mimi Nina watoto sita mafuta ni mia mbili Bado hujanunua Chakula unafikiri utamanage hiyo kweli naunza mboga na faida napata kwa siku ni mia tatu hiyo ndio chakula,mafuta ya stove,na Kila kitu utaweza kweli!? Ruto atusaidie tunaskia Tanzania na Uganda mafuta ni rahisi huku kwetu tulifanyia serikali nini.” She stated.

 

Bodaboda Plight

As try to take a glare and screened what Jane is going through bodaboda sector is another worst hit by high pump prices.

Many have been forced to increase fares but the challenge is their customers are opting to other means such as matatus.

“Jo tunaumia mambo ya fuel inaturamba tumejaribu kuongeza fare laikini hiyo Sasa pia inatuchenga juu wale wateja wetu wameamua watembe mguu ama wachukue Matatu.Boda huwa ni kitu ya kukimbiza msee faster pahali anaenda lakini saa hii imefika wakati wanasema hiyo ikae.” rider said.

Government Response

Despite this spike  government says the recent increase could have been worse and that it intervene and cushion Kenyans through  stabilization mechanism to be funded by Petroleum Development Levy in line with the Petroleum Development Levy Order of 2020.

According to EPRA, without the subsidy a liter of super petrol would have increased by 8.79 shillings, diesel by 16.12 shillings and Kerosene by 12.05 shillings.
