Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has slammed critics of the school feeding programme describing them as insensitive.

Sakaja says his Dishi na County programme is on course and no one will stop him from feeding children.

“Feeding our children is not a function devolution is not a competition national Government devolution is not a competition it is a partnership of how we serve our people better the same way we issue a bursary is the same feeding is not a County Government function but am glad with the support of the president we have a frame work .. we’ve put Ksh. 1.2 billion they have given  us another 1.2 billion,” he said.

Legal Battle

The programme is facing a looming court battle that may derail its implementation.

According to former Education CEC Janet Muthoni Ouko, Nairobi has only 205 public primary schools, but there are at least 3,000 non-formal educational institutions, majority of which are found in the areas around Kibra, Mathare, Mukuru, Kibagare, Kiambiu, Maili Saba, and Kawangware and therefore it is not inclusive.

She criticized the governor for seeking to spend money on a project that is not devolved.

Ouko vowed to fight governor in court until the programme is streamlined and is inclusive.

“We shall move to court to seek orders stopping the expenditure of Nairobi County funds in programs that further marginalize the poorest of the poor in Nairobi,” she said.
