Security Threat in Haiti

 As President William Ruto move to deploy 1000 police officers in  Haiti for a peacekeeping mission, it has been revealed that all is not well in the Caribbean country with gangs taking advantage of the state and its citizens playing a normal fiddle.

Jovenel Moïse, the president of Haiti, was assassinated on 7 July 2021 at 1 a.m. EDT (UTC−04:00) at his residence in Port-au-Prince. A group of 28 foreign mercenaries, mostly Colombians, are alleged to be responsible for the killing.

Various powerful countries like United States of America,France and even Canada with large success and large failures realized.The gangs have been persistent in their activities attacking state facilities, blocking roads, torching homes and many other atrocities.

More than 2,000 killings in the first six months of this year; more than 1,000 kidnappings in the same period, over five million Haitians who urgently need humanitarian assistance, tens of thousands of Haitians facing catastrophic hunger, nearly 60,000 suspected cholera.

“People face attacks by armed gangs controlling areas in the capital or provincial towns. They assassinate ,set res steal and abuse with cruelty. They drive citizens from their homes, block roads and force hospitals, schools and businesses to close.” Haitan PM Ariel Henry said on Friday last week.

US Support on Kenyans on Mission

Ruto had during his trip to New York last week, agreed to offer assistance to the proposed UN Security Mission to Haiti.Kenya will also receive 14.7  billion  shillings from US to facilitate the mission.

“We resolved to work together to bring peace and stability to Haiti. The grateful Dominican Republic will establish a mission in Nairobi,” Ruto said.

Meanwhile Defence Cabinet Secretary Austin Lloyd in his tour of the country said  once the anticipated peacekeeping mission to Haiti undergoes all legal requirements, Kenya shall be ready to offer a key leadership role to bring peace to the country.

“This will be in total respect to the human rights of all the civilians in Haiti,the US shall provide financial and logistical support to make the peace support mission a success.”

President William Ruto has committed to deploying over 1,000 police officers to Haiti to help restore peace and security in the country.
